Wells Hall on Michigan State University’s campus has been featured on the cover of the latest edition of Modern Steel Construction Magazine! Wells Hall features a prominent 88,000-square-foot addition and a full infrastructure renovation to one of the busiest buildings on campus. Completed in August 2012, Wells Hall is home to the College of Arts & Letters while still housing the four largest and busiest lecture halls at MSU. Wells Hall is a hub of student and faculty activity, as well as the recognizable face of the University Language Department. Even students who do not have classes in Wells Hall can be found hanging out in the atrium enjoying the picturesque view. All of the project challenges have been well worth the hard work! Larry Hamilton’s photograph that was included in the 2015 calendar was taken at the Eliel Saarinen designed Cranbrook Art Museum in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. The late afternoon shadows from the entry terrace columns cast an interesting bold pattern on the building’s façade.
Stringent temperature and humidity control and air-filtration systems pervade the site. Eight ultra-low vibration chambers, housed below grade, have been designed and constructed. Investigators will conduct research at unprecedented levels of precision and accuracy.
This $46-million complex was made possible, in part, by a $9.5-million grant from the National Institute of Standards and Technology. This addition is the first phase of a two-part project. The second phase, now in progress, will renovate the original G.G. Brown Laboratories, constructed in the late 1950s, to greatly enhance its infrastructure and realize a student-centric state-of-the-art education facility. The State of Michigan, alumni, friends and corporate partners have been essential supporters in making this project possible.

We can’t wait for the AIA Detroit’s Celebration of Architecture, part of the Detroit Design Festival. Join us and a host of other local design professionals and creatives this Thursday, September 25th in Eastern Market for a night of drinks, design and celebration!
Specifically, we will be receiving a 2014 AIA Detroit Building Award for our work on the Alice Lloyd Hall Renovation on the University of Michigan’s campus. The jury gave us credit for the vast improvement achieved in the renovation, and appreciated the fresh palate and use of vibrant of activity spaces to transform the ambiance of the residence hall.
We’re thrilled to have won this award, and we can’t wait to celebrate with everyone on Thursday! Hope to see you there!
Changing Lives Together is a $135 million campaign to strengthen Catholic parishes in southeast Michigan and preserve Church ministries in Detroit. As a part of that program, the congregation at St. Irenaeus Parish in Rochester Hills has begun to see exciting new changes to the exterior of their 32 year-old church building. Nearly 600 parish households at St. Irenaeus pledged more than $1.2 million to fulfill the $925,000 parish campaign goal for renovation and beautification projects. Pledge proceeds have already enabled the church to replace the original boiler in the Religious Education building in time for winter, along with wood repairs, painting, staining and sprucing up the outside of the church.
This upcoming spring, work will also commence on renovating and expanding the church Gathering Area, a project that IDS has been very happy to be involved with. The new expansion’s exterior has been designed to look as if it had been an original part of the church built in the early 1980’s. It will be bright, spacious and above all it will be a great place for the parishioners to congregate and welcome.
