The IDS team attended the Grand Opening of the EMU SAPSC Tuesday, August 27th. This student athlete facility defines the northern boundary of Rynearson Stadium as the home for Eastern Michigan football and as a space for all student athletes to come train.
IDS attended the Domino’s Innovation Garage Grand Opening, Wednesday, August 21. The event included a tour of the building with one of Domino’s CEOs and enjoying pizza from the new test kitchen as well as a demonstration of the autonomous vehicles manufactured by Nuro. This new facility is designed to accommodate permanent workspace for an initial 90 research staff and a planned additional growth space for 60 more over a five-year period.
Now in its third year in Detroit, the Christopher Kelley Leadership Development Program has announced its 2019 – 2020 class will include IDS architect Charlie Haas.
With a goal of nurturing emerging industry leaders, the CKLDP encourages engagement with industry trends, supports leadership development skills and fosters connections between area professionals. Charlie explains he is excited about the program because “[it] looks to cover so many topics, many of which I don’t get to experience on a daily basis, [I believe] it will start to fill in those gaps in my experience and help me on a day-to-day basis.”
The program consists of day-long programming led by pairs from the cohort. Program topics include Working Together, Engaging Your Community, Entrepreneurship and Business Management, The Art of Negotiating, Closing the Deal, Expanding the Definition of Practice, Industry Culture, and The Future of Practice.
IDS architects Katy Litwin and Zac VanOverbeke participated in the first two years of the Detroit chapter’s program, respectively. Charlie says he “applied for the program because … they couldn’t stop speaking highly of it. I have a desire to always keep learning, so the program just seemed like a natural fit.”
The 2019 – 2020 cohort is due to kick-off their year in September with an introductory bootcamp.

IDS has been working on bringing Michigan State University’s new STEM Teaching Facility to life since 2016 and is proud to share progress of its construction as the first building in the state utilizing mass timber for the building’s frame, and cross-laminated timber (CLT) for its floors and ceilings.
The use of wood rather than steel and concrete relies on naturally occurring, renewable materials and promotes the growth and cultivation of trees and forests, sequestering carbon in the atmosphere otherwise negatively contributing to climate change.
IDS and MSU have partnered with Ellenzweig, a design firm from Boston, on the development of this one-of-a-kind facility. Due to open in Fall 2020, the STEM Teaching Facility will provide a vibrant, active student commons, seamlessly connecting disciplines and supporting evolving curriculum and pedagogies focused on self-guided learning, laboratory instruction, and student research.
In conjunction with the development of the STEM Teaching Facility, IDS is renovating the former Shaw Lane Power Plant. Adjacent to the new building, the renovated Power Plant will serve as a campus hub for teaching and learning across the sciences, arts, and humanities. The development of these buildings will culminate in an interdisciplinary, collaborative, and centrally-located complex on MSU’s campus.
